The 46th annual Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta got off to a high-flying start this past weekend with residents and visitors alike enjoying the awe-inspiring visual spectacle taking place at Balloon Fiesta Park. It was only the beginning of the festivities, which will continue until Sunday, October 15th, that includes everything from laser light shows, to chainsaw carving, to the Fiesta of Wheels car show and so much more. Residents of Albuquerque look forward to this festival each year and visitors from all over the country come to ABQ to share in the good times.
There are so many great attractions during the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta that it’s hard for us to pick a favorite, but one event comes to mind that, deservedly, gets a fair amount of national attention. The America’s Challenge Gas Balloon Race started in 1995 when Mark Sullivan, former Balloon Fiesta President had a vision for America to be identified with the world’s most prestigious ballooning sport. The race is modeled after the Coupe Aeronautique Gordon Bennett, the world’s oldest gas balloon race, which typically has a starting point somewhere in Europe but has been known to start off in various U.S. cities. The main difference is that the America’s Challenge Gas Balloon Race allows balloons from all countries, without limits on the number of entries from each. The winning balloon is the one that travels the farthest from Albuquerque. The official Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta website makes it easy to track the progress of the contestants.
With all the great events planned, you don’t want to miss this year’s festival. As a local moving company with a long history in Albuquerque, we can say that there are few things we look forward to more than this event; other than helping with your Albuquerque move of course! You can see a full event itinerary by viewing the official 2017 Daily Event Schedule, so be sure to plan ahead for a fun time with the whole family.
